1st Hair Cut

We finally cut Leon's hair.  It was a bitter sweet day but it had to be done.
Scarlett insisted on being in the pictures.

We cut off a good two or even three inches in some spots.

He looks like such a little man now.  Very cute, but just older.  And his hair looks way lighter.  I wonder if it will keep getting lighter or stay the same.

Hair Cut

His hair is getting seriously long.  We took these pictures a few weeks ago so it is even longer now.  I think it might be time for a haircut.  But I am still hesitant.  We were actually going to cut it a few weeks ago but I just can't bring myself to do it.  Maybe I will be able to do it tonight....maybe...

Valentines Day Heart Pigtails Hair Tutorial

Need a quick valentines hairdo for your little girl?  These heart pigtails are soooooo easy and barely take any time at all.  Even if you don't think you are good at doing hair just ahead and give them a try, you will be surprised what you can do.

1) Brush out the hair.
2) Make pigtails
3) Do an upside down topsy tail.  Separate the hair into two groups and twist each group toward the head.  Then secure underneath with a rubber band.  Repeat on the other side.
Watch the video to see it done!

I am making an ebook full of hairstyles for your little girl.  I have over 40 done but this is one of my favorites.  I can't wait for it to be finished so you all can check it out.

Penelope's First Hair Cut

Penelope hasn't had her hair cut yet and it was getting pretty scraggly so I thought it was time.  She was excited about it and wanted it cut like Scarlett's (above her shoulders).  I was able to convince her to leave it long.  On the one hand I believe that it is just hair and she should be able to do what she wants, but on the other hand I really like it long.  So I felt a little conflicted.  But in the end she was happy to have it long so it worked out.
Right before the haircut she was having her doubts.  She was saying that she didn't want to, but she never cried or got whiny about it.  I think the fact that she got to wear a cape and sit on the princess chair helped.  That, and I told her she could have a candy cane if she didn't wiggle.  She did great.
And once she was done Talitha even let her help with my hair.  She was actually putting the color on.  It was pretty cute.  I had fun with her at the salon.  My mom had Scarlett and Tucker was in school so this was one of the only times she got to be the only kid and I think she really enjoyed it.
Maybe next time I'll let her cut it a bit shorter.

Felt Bow Tutorial

These felt bows are adorable and very easy to make.  Perfect for pinning aside little girls hair.  Or even at the top of a ponytail or pigtails.  With Christmas coming up this might be the perfect gift or stocking stuffer.

Materials needed:
Felt
Hot glue
Hair Clip (I got these from Sally's)

 1) Cut the felt pieces.  My top piece is about 8" long and 1 1/2" thick, but that can change depending on how large you want your bow to be.  The second piece should be about an inch larger than half your first piece.
 2) Fold the bow piece, then bunch it in the middle and glue it or sew it.  I stabbed the needle through then wrapped it around a few times.
 3) Glue the bow piece to the back piece.  I used my new pink cordless glue gun.
 4) Glue the last piece around the middle and trim the end.  Make sure it starts and finishes on the backside.
 5) Glue your clip on.  Sometimes I first put a piece of ribbon over the clip but I didn't here and it is not necessary.

That's it!

Next week I will be giving away both of these bows and a pink cordless hot glue gun so check back on Monday to enter.

Heart Braid Tutorial

I love how Penelope's hair is now long enough for me to play with.  I remember when she was a baby and I was just dying for her hair to grow and thicken up so I could put pig tails in it.  It seems like those days are long gone for her and I don't really feel the same about Scarlett's hair.  I am perfectly happy with her hair not being long enough to do much of anything.  Penelope usually doesn't ever want me to do her hair aside from a quick pony tail to get the hair out of her face but on Sunday's I insist.

We finally got the heart braid to work.  It is very easy, I only had a hard time before because she would scream and wiggle around a ton making it very hard to do.

Step By Step Tutorial on How to do a Heart Braid

1) Split the top of the hair in half and clip half of it out of the way.
2) Start a French braid backwards in the corner.
3) Curve your french braid around usually grabbing much more hair on the side closer to her face.
4) Continue the braid and put a rubber band on it.
5) Do the same thing on the other side and use a rubber band to hold them both together.

That's it.  I like to use the cheap tiny rubber bands for Penelope's hair.  I get a 500 pack at the dollar store and it lasts forever.  I never reuse the bands because they stretch out.
I love everything girly.  Don't get me wrong, I am pretty into sports and things like that too.  But, bows, hair, makeup, pink, I love it all!

How to Tease hair and use Bump Its

Since I am giving away a teasing brush here I thought it would be fun to do a tutorial using the brush.

I first got the bumpits a couple years ago for my birthday and at first Bob thought it was funny.  Ok, I know it is a little embarrassing that I have something they have infomercials for but I am glad I got it (I don't love it as much as I love my snuggie, but that is a different matter).  I know they sell at walmart and if you click the link above you will see that Amazon even sells them for only $6.39.  Now before I start to sound like an advertisement I want to say that it is totally possible and even not that difficult to do a bump or poof in your hair without the bumpits.  I just like them because I can get a bigger poof and it helps my poofs to last longer.

As far as the teasing brush goes, don't buy one, just win one from my blog.  And if you don't win you can probably get one from any hair salon for under $10.

In the picture I used the largest bump and I normally don't use that one or do a poof quite so large but I thought I would use it to demonstrate.
Teasing your hair is not very difficult.  All you do is pick up the hair, start the brush on the underneath side of the hair a couple inches away from your head and bring it down closer to your head.  It is hard to explain in words so just watch the video.
Have fun!

At Home Highlights

Cherish and Cayleen came over on Wednesday and we highlighted her hair.  I was nervous about it because even though I worked in a salon during high school I have never done anything like this before.  She bought the bleach and developer from Sallys and we used regular kitchen tin foil and gave it a try.
I think it turned out well and Cayleen seemed to like it too.  One thing that I think helped is that my sister (who owns a hair salon) talked to me about what to do on the phone before we got started.  We only did the top half of her hair which was good because it took me about 1 hr and 45 minutes to get it all on.  Also Cherish was my extra set of hands, I don't think I could have done it without her holding the foil while I put the bleach on the hair.

I get my hair highlighted by my sister regularly and I have also used a box to color my hair.  But I have friends who have never colored their hair at all.  I think it is fun to try different colors and styles.  Now I am thinking about going red to match my kids but I don't know I am ready yet. Should I?  I figure that it is only hair and if it doesn't look good it will always grow back and I can start with my natural color again.  That is why I think I will let my kids do whatever they want with their hair.  Would you let your kids do something crazy with their hair?
