Reading

Tucker and I worked hard to teach him how to read.  I got this book called "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.  And let me tell you, they were not easy.  Yeah the first 25 lessons were a breeze.  But once we got into the 30s every day was a struggle.  The point is you do a lesson everyday and in 100 days your child knows how to read.  I will have to say it worked.  We finished just before Tucker's birthday and I can honestly say he can read.  He doesn't like to read but he can.  He loves it when I read to him but reading himself is a chore.  And I can't blame him.  We struggled for about an hour to two hours everyday working on the "20 minute" lessons.  I am sure that for some they only take 20 minutes, but for us it took much longer.  We had many days that we needed to take a break because Tucker was screaming and crying and I couldn't handle telling him to pay attention.  It is not Tucker's fault, it was hard work for him and he did a great job.  I am just glad it is done.

I know it sounds like I am complaining but I really do want to recommend this book.  It was so easy to follow and it really did teach Tucker how to read.  He is not perfect but he went from knowing some sounds to being able to actually read at a beginner level.  The book does some cool things that I would have never thought of.  If a letter is silent than it is small.  And the vowels have lines above them so you know which sound they are making.  Also it teaches things like th as a new sound.  But the good part is that once your child learns to read it phases them out so they can read a normal font.  So if you want to teach your child to read but don't know how get the book and give it a try.  It is at Amazon for only $13.

Here is a video of Tucker reading from it.  I used a clip of this for his birthday video so you might recognize it.  If you watch closely you can see the small letters and the lines.  I also want to say that this story is around lesson 60 and he hasn't read it since we were on that lesson about 50 days before I took this video.

  1. i think it is a boy thing, My son enjoys reading after he starts but it is a struggle to get him to start. I would recommend getting the step 1 or 2 books they have at WalMart here. He got a Batman book and they have Ninjago books as well, also Daddy buys him comic books as well!Good luck it is so hard with little boys!
