Tissue Paper Pom Pom Tutorial DIY

These tissue paper pom poms were the perfect decoration for Scarlett's first birthday party (more on that next week).  I hung three of them in a row right above the dinner table and it turned out super cute.  I know you can buy these things but they aren't too hard to make so you might as well just make them.

Materials Needed:
8-10 sheets of tissue paper
pipe cleaners or any wire (I used twist ties)
scissors
string

1) first take your tissue paper, I used sheets that were 20" by 30" and start folding accordion style.  Making the folds about 1 1/2" apart.

This makes a large pom pom.  Around 19".  I also tried to make smaller ones but didn't quite get the proportions right so they didn't fluff as easily.
2) Take the wire and wrap it around the center of your accordion.  Then gently fold it back and forth in half.
3) Cut the tips to points.
4) Unfold it and start to gently pull the paper apart.

If you pull too hard it will rip.  If you don't pull hard enough you won't be able to get a ball.  This was the hardest part.  Just spend time fluffing and bunching until it looks how you like it.

5) Tie a string to your wire and hang it up.  You are done!

Here is a picture of Martha's Pom Poms.  I'll have to admit hers look better than mine.

Have fun with your pom poms!

  2. I love poms. I made them for Riley's birthday party and managed to break two pairs of scissors in the process. Too much tissue paper apparently. Thanks so much for sharing at Whimsy Wednesdays.
