House Plans

Before we came to Japan to live we bought land with the intent to build a house near where we were living in Washington.  As we now move closer and closer to the move back to Washington day arrives (T-minus two years) it is time for us to get more serious about our house building plans.  Right now the plan is for us to get the land as ready as possible before we move back.  Then for Bob to build the house himself during his spare time once we arrive.  It isn't the easiest way to do it, but with Bob doing all the labor we should be able to afford the exact house that we want.  And building a house is something Bob really wants to do.

Here is the plan that we have been thinking seriously about.
We would tweak this to our exact liking.  One major change would be a garage with a mudroom would be attached to the side near the entrance, which is about the middle of the house.

I'm also thinking about shortening the island so I can move the table area along the wall.  It would be perpendicular with the island instead of parallel to it.  But I'm really not sure on this so if anyone has input in that area that would be great.

We want to turn the mech room into a pantry, and do a few changes to the layout of the master bathroom.
Upstairs we would probably turn the second master into a playroom and the office into a bedroom.  That way all four girls will share the bigger room and the boys will share the smaller room (labeled office).  The playrooms and bedrooms will have access to lofts that will be above the bathroom/closets.  The ceilings will all be vaulted except the bathroom/closet making the lofts possible.  We will probably move the smaller bathroom to the end of the hall (where the opening to the office is) so the bathroom door leads to the hallway instead of directly into a bedroom and a closet will go in it's place.
What do you think?  I'd love any suggestions or advice we haven't gotten any real plans drawn up so this is the perfect time to change things around.

I would definitely try to tweak the way the doors go into the bedrooms. Seems like a lot of wasted space when you walk into the rooms at the end of the corridor. Also maybe a few more bedrooms. We also have four daughters and the oldest did not enjoy sharing a room when she got into middle school and beyond(did anyway). One day they just want their privacy which is not a bad thing. Think long and hard if you are the open concept kind of person. Your whole house will be on display at one time without any walls. Exciting to think about the possibilities.

Exciting! It’s always so hard to know exactly what you want until you’re in the house! Right after we moved in there was a few things I wanted to change. All well. But definitely have a mud room connected to the garage! And lots of storage closets. And put outlets on both sides of your island! Very exciting. I can’t believe Bob is going to build it all himself!

I still think you need more bedrooms. Even if the girls always want to share you will have a room for guest. Remember lots of storage and think about cleaning the windows and how to keep the sun out if it gets too hot (or glare if you are watching TV or something).
