How to Pierce a Babies Ears

I know everyone has different opinions about when to pierce a girls ears.  Mine is to do it before they are old enough to grab them and play with them.  I did it when Penelope was 6 months and it worked out fine so just after Thanksgiving we did the same thing with Scarlett.  Did it hurt her?  Yes.  Was she over it after I finished feeding her?  Yes!

So if you are thinking about when the best time to pierce your daughters ears I think it is around 6 months.  My mom made me wait until I was 14 and it was hard.  Maybe this video tutorial will help you decide.  My sister Talitha is the one doing the ear piercing in this.  She owns her own salon and even though she doesn't like to pierce baby ears she does have experience.  According to her the hardest time to pierce a child's ear is between the ages of 5 and 11.  That is the time they get really scared and cry about it and then they take the earrings out and stuff like that.

Here is a picture of Scarlett's ear the next day.  As you can see she has the thicker earring in her ear.  I bought it at Sally's for $7.  If you are piercing a babies ear make sure you get the mini size.  Even with it being mini she still has some space there, which can be nice if there is swelling.  Her ears didn't swell.  As far as maintenance on the ears goes I just washed them with soap and water and make sure to turn them or move them back and forth once a day.

Here she is eating my lens cap with her new earrings on.

Wow. I wondered why Penelope had hers done so early, and now I know. You're lucky to have a sister who does that!

Doranda,

Was searching for a GF's blog and came across yours. Started reading and came across your post about having Scarlett's ears pierced.

I think you're a smart and thoughtful mommy for considering having your dd's ears pierced now. However, I agree it is better and easier when they are younger since they won't play with their ears and just grow up with earrings thinking it is a part of them. Ask our ped when to do it and she encouraged me to go ahead when mommy could care for them.

Our Ped gave me some " Tips for moms having their dd's ears pierced since she had so many moms ask about having their infants and little girls ears pierced. I know cerebrally, as mothers of girls of all ages, we know it celebrates their femaleness and femininity. After all, they are little girls, right?

Promise she'll thank you later for the "gift of pierced ears" as an infant and will look adorable in her upcoming holiday pictures.

If any other moms would like any of our ped’s tips for piercing, then don’t hesitate to write me an e-mail. They include OTC meds to
minimize any discomfort as well as how to find the most experienced person to pierce her ears.
